O jornalista Merval Pereira, colunista do GLOBO, tomou posse na última sexta-feira (23/09), na Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL). Numa cerimônia realizada na sede da instituição, no Centro, ele assumiu a cadeira de número 31, sucedendo o escritor Moacyr Scliar, morto em fevereiro deste ano. Merval é a oitava pessoa a ocupar a cadeira 31 da ABL, cujo fundador é Guimarães Junior e que tem como patrono Pedro Luís. Merval exerceu cargos de reportagem e de chefia nos principais veículos da imprensa brasileira. Ganhou em 1979 o Prêmio Esso pela série de reportagens "A segunda guerra, sucessão de Geisel", publicada no "Jornal de Brasília" em parceria com André Gustavo Stumpf e depois transformada em livro. É autor ainda de "O lulismo no poder" e recebeu da ABL a medalha Machado de Assis.
